Servicing and Maintenance

It is a legal requirment to have your materials handling equipment serviced and maintained in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.

Most service itervals for I.C and BE units is every 250 hours to 300 hours. This depends greatly on the operational enviroment the equipment is operated in. Equipment operated in harsh enviroments must be serviced and inspected more reqularly.

  • Servicing every 250 - 300 hours
  • Documented Safety Inspection of unit
  • Service and Repair records
  • Service due sticker

Is your current service provider servicing your equipment correctly and to current OH&S standards or are they leaving your business expossed to possible litigation if an injury or accident arrises as a result of poorly maintained equipment. Is their service documentation up to date and clearly marked with the servicing or repairs they have performed.

Regular servicing and maintenance is the key to safety, reliability and productivity.

Forklift Safety Features

To achieve OH&S forklift compliance, you should be making sure the equipment itself is as safe as possible for operators.

As a result it makes sense that OH&S forklift compliance should place such emphasis on the safety and proper maintenance of forklifts. Below are just some of the considerations you should be making in the effort to achieve OH&S forklift compliance, with other issues being addressed as they arise within your workplace.

Some of the standard safety features your forklifts should include are:

  • Ratchet-style locking brake levers that can’t be easily (or accidentally) disengaged
  • Wide foot-steps & accessible grab-bars for easy forklift access
  • Reverse alarms
  • Speed Limiters
  • Fluro Seatbelt indicators
  • Hydraulic function lock-outs
  • Camera systems
  • Sequesntial start operation
  • Blue beam lights

These items make for a safer working enviroment.

Selecting / purchasing new plant and equipment

Recently we have come across a lot of businesses that have just purchased a Forklift that really isn’t suitable for the businesses at all. Before going out and purchasing a Forklift, you must consider the following carefully:

  • Load weight
  • Load size
  • Surface conditions
  • Layout and size of the workplace
  • Confined spaces with poor ventilation
  • Pallet racking heights
  • Are specific attachments required

Purchasing the wrong Forklift for your business can be a safety hazard in itself. It is very important that you take the time to thoroughly consider all of your needs before speaking to a sales rep.

Finally, be careful when purchasing a used Forklift from a dealer. The sales man will be pushing onto you the model Forklift that they have in stock to sell regardless of your requirements. So you must take the time to assess your requirements in detail before speaking to a number of sales reps. This way you will be clear of the needs of your business. This will allow you to make the best possible purchase and this will in turn make for a safer workplace.
